Toll in Norway

In Norway, the construction costs for roads, bridges and tunnels are paid by means of toll levies. Each new construction project gives rise to at least one new toll station. As soon as the construction costs have been recouped by means of toll charges, the toll station is dismantled once again. In Norway, there is therefore a permanent change in the location and number of toll stations. At present, there are approximately 50 building projects for which at least one toll station has been erected. For example, more than 18 toll stations were erected for an "Oslo City" building project. In order to reduced toll collection charges, all the toll stations were fully automated (> 80 %).

Manual levying of toll charges

Toll charges may still be paid manually (in cash or by means of a credit card) at increasingly fewer toll stations (less than 2 % with the percentage rate decreasing) are still able to pay the toll charge manually. In this process, a differentiation is made between lanes which are occupied by personnel or lanes which only have slot machines. In the case of lanes with coin machines, it should be ensured that sufficient coins are available at all times. No change is given by the machines.
Note: The BP PLUS fuelcard is not accepted at manual points of payment in Norway!
Caution

A penalty of NOK 300 is charged if you use automated AutoPass lanes without an AutoPass account even though a lane for manual payment is available.

Automatic toll collection

Most toll stations (more than 80 % with the percentage increasing) are fully-automated toll machines. The toll collection is effected in the normal flow of traffic. At the aforesaid toll stations, it is not possible to pay the toll manually and it is strictly forbidden to stop. Instead, the toll collection is effected by an AutoPass Box ('BP TollBox') or by reading the vehicle's license plate number by means of cameras.
  • AutoPass Box ('BP TollBox')

The AutoPass Box ('BP TollBox') is a small device affixed to the windscreen. All toll passes are recorded automatically with this device. The AutoPass Box ('BP TollBox') can also be used at toll stations (bridges and ferries) in Denmark and Sweden. And you can also benefit from high rebates. Toll charges are settled conveniently through your BP PLUS fuelcard.

  • Credit balance on the AutoPass account

A credit account for settling toll charges may be established with a number of Norwegian toll operators. In addition to an advance payment, the number plate of the vehicle is registered, if the credit account is exhausted, the account is immediately replenished once again up to the original amount. Only VISA and MasterCard are currently accepted as means of payment. Please note that the contract duration of a credit account is a maximum of three months. The residual amount on the account of your credit card is credited after the end of the contract period.

The use of an AutoPass credit account is limited outside Norway and no discounts are granted.

  • Vehicles without an AutoPass

If neither an AutoPass Box ('BP TollBox') nor an AutoPass credit account is available for a vehicle license plate number, the vehicle owner will be determined by the toll operator and an invoice will be forwarded by mail. If foreign vehicles are involved, invoices are issued by Euro Parking Collection plc (EPC) with a processing charge also being due.

BP offers the AutoPass Box ('BP TollBox') especially for foreign freight carriers and business travellers. Simply send the box back to us as soon as you no longer need it.
